Overstap

Thank you and enjoy!

Switch

Last week we have had a lot of contact with EF. Before we started this process we knew for students who finished VWO6 it is hard to go on an exchange. This is because the American government usually doesn't allow students to go to high school in the US if they've already had twelve years of education. However some high school do accept foreign students who have had these twelve years of education because not only the education but the whole experience is what counts.

Thanks to all the recommendations I collected I did get accepted by the Dutch employees, but it turned out to be hard to get accepted by the American department after all. It seemed to be impossible to realize my American-dream.

When we heard I wouldn't get accepted we went looking for alternatives: other school systems, other countries and other organizations. We called one other organization and started with explaining the situation. This organization told us how hard it is to get accepted as a VWO student with a medical rapport, but they offered to contact the American office and ask about the possibilities. This organization, Into, co-operates with multiple American partners, to whom they presented my situation and asked whether they could accept me.

Therefore we frequently had contact with Into last week. The Dutch department, stated in Rosmalen, emailed or called us every day. Two of these three partners didn't accept me, but friday we finally got the good news: I got accepted! And this time not only the Dutch department but also the American department said I could participate in their high school program, which means there is no doubt if I'll go to the US. So I finally know I'll GO! This does mean that from now on I will be a Into Exchange Student and not an EF Exchange Student anymore. This also means I've to start the application process all over again.

Where I previously announced that I would definitely go to America, I really did think this was the case. However every time I - unexpectedly - got some bad news.

At the on hand this message does sound the same as the previous ones but at the other hand it seems like I won't be rejected later on.

Nevertheless I'm still scared to fully believe it's really going to happen. Of course I am really happy, but every time I received a positive message it was followed by a negative one. I know the situation is different this time, since the American partner already knows who I am and since they already accepted me, but the fear that it might go wrong after all is still present.

From this moment on I will - of course - put all my motivation into the Into-process (that sounds funny :) ) and I'll try to finish the dossier as soon as possible. The American employees can only start searching for a host family when they receive this completed dossier. And when they find the perfect host family for me, the application really is finished!

The conclusion is that I will be spending next school year in the United States of America, where I will stay with a local host family and attend a local high school. At the sixth and seventh of Juny a preparation-seminar (PDS) will be held and besides I will have to prepare a lot at home (starting with passing my levels). Somewhere in August I will leave for my adventure and when they have found they have found the host family where I will be staying, I will hear more about the exact date of department. After first attending a Welcome Camp of five days in New York, I will travel to the host family.

I'm really looking forward to new year and I can't wait until I hear the region. the town/village I will be spending my exhange year! I would really like it if you follow my adventures by subscribing to this blog. Comments, questions and emails (comments and contact form) are always more than welcome!

Thank you and enjoy!

First vaccination and tuberculosistest

At nine o'clock this morning me and my mom went to the GGD to get my first Hepatitis vaccination and to do a tuberculosistest.

At first I had to complete a form with all sort of questions about my health situation and about my plans for next year. After that a fellow worker of the GGD informed me about the vaccinations which I've already received and which ones I have to receive before I leave in July.

Happily I received all of the mandatory vaccinations to enter America, exept from the Hepatitis B
(and A in some states) vaccination. This means I got the first of three Hepatitis A/B vaccins this morning. It actually hurt quite a bit and my arm still feels massive (common side effect. I asked, just to be sure).

After that we walked a few meters to the TCB-department. A new form with mostly similiar questions and again (sort of) a vaccination. This time they injected some liquid in my forearm. This will result in a small bump which will, after 48 hours, tell the TBC-department-lady if I'm suffering from tuberculosis (probably not because the changes of catching tuberculosis in The Netherlands are very small).

Beside all of the above, I also went to the GP today so he could complete the Medical Rapport (in stead of thursday). Again more pages filled with questions. They said the rapport will be filled in tomorrow.

Luckily tomorrow I'll have a lot of completed forms and required information so a big part of the application is done. After that the completed dossier can finally be sent to America!

Toch weer onzekerheid

Opnieuw afwachten dus.

Uncertaincty, again

After a long period of uncertainty if I'ld be able to go on an exchange year and a few weeks ago finally the news that I got accepted, we received a message today that there is the possibility that I won't be able to go after all. At the moment I only got accepted by the Dutch EF-department but normally all students who get accepted go on an exchange. However, due to my age and the fact that I will have finished a VWO degree, this may not be the case after all.

After receiving this message I first felt very (!) downhearted (and I still do) and at the moment I'm not really in the position yet to look for an alternative. But, since I'm running out of time me and my mom did search on the internet to other possibilities to go abroad (for instance another school system (an EF school) or another country). We haven't decided anything yet but we will collect information about these other options.

Consequently this is the start of a new period filled with uncertainty, questions and stress. We will carry on the (medical) planning for this week (vaccinations, TBC-test, collecting blood, et cetera) because this can't wait any longer if I do go.

Unfortunately it will take some time untill I know what will hapen, since we are still waiting on the information about the vaccinations. We need this information to finish my dossier and until then the Dutch department won't be able to sent it to America to get a final statement.

More waiting it is.

Open dag RUG

Orientation-day University of Groningen

Although next year I'll be going on an amazing adventure and I although next year I won't go to university yet, I'm looking for studies which I may want to apply for after my exchange.

Today was the second orientation day of the University of Groningen. Me and my mom visited four presentations about four different studies. We already visited the presentation about Psychology during the last orientation day and I've been a Student For A Day. The study Psychology really fits me - like we expected - but nevertheless I'm looking for other studies.

The first presentation we visited today was about the International Business Program. I really liked it! The economical part as well as the psychological part and most of all: the fact that the study is completely (thaught) in English.

I'm really glad I found a second study I like but I'm not able yet to decide which study to apply for. Both studies have - of course - parts I like such as parts I don't like.

Since I was little I've been interested in (the study) Psychology; to find out where human thoughts and actions come from. As a result of being a Student For A Day I know the study indeed fits me and the stories students and former students tell me about the possibilies you have during and after the study make me really exited. At the other hand it is hard to find a job as a psychologist.

The study IB focusses on both the economical and the human part of business. Personally I'm not really profit-orientated so it isn't that part that (particularly) appeals to me. However I do like the subject Economy and I'm quite good at it.
I especially like the way the study is thaught and also the changes to find a job are more sufficient. Also the international-part is something I really like, since I hope to travel (a lot) in the future and maybe work abroad.

If I decide to apply for Psychology I will have to apply this year because I have to take part in the selection procedure (due to the fact that I'll be in the US next year). If I chose to apply for IB I don't have to register already because I can take part in the selection procedure while I'm in America (because for IB I don't have to make a test).

The exchange year will be profitable for both studies. The textbooks of both studies are in English and the experiences with the English languages are a 'plus' in the selection procedure of IB.

Overall it will be a hard choice with a lot of consideration and list-making. I hope to be a Student For A Day again in March, to even get more information about IB. Afterwards I really do have to make a decision.

Planning

  • Tussen 2 en 6 februari: ontvangen inentingen-informatie;
  • Dinsdag 3 februari: onderzoek en afname van een tuberculosetest door de GGD;
  • Dinsdag 3 februari: eerste Hepatitis B inenting;
  • Donderdag 5 februari: controle tuberculosetest;
  • Donderdag 5 februari: bloedafname;

Planning

Again some time has passed but the application still isn't finished.

After recieving the official forms on the 15th of January I inmediately started completing them. The forms and questions I was able and alloud to answer myself are ready to be send to EF. Unfortunately it is taking some (a long) time to complete the medical and academic rapport.

The EF-planning for next week:
  • Between February 2nd and 6th: recieving information about vaccinations;
  • Tuesday February 3rd: tubercolosistest and other tests by the GGD;
  • Tuesday February 3rd: first Hepatitis B vaccination;
  • Thursday February 5th: check up of tubercolosistest;
  • Thursday February 5th: blood collection;
  • Thursday February 5th: tests for completing the medical rapport.
It's going to be a busy week but there will be some progress! Hopefully the testresults come back 'positive' because the medical rapport is very important for my placement at a host family (based on the testresults they still can decide to not let me participate in the program). It still makes me nervous!

Papierwerk

Zeker als je moet schijven over the things you want to accomplish in life.

Paperwork

What do I do on a saturday? Filling in forms for EF!

To apply every student has to complete a dossier at MyEF.com. At the site you have to answer all sort of questions about yourself, your hobbies, your family, your daily life, the area you live in, et cetera. During the period I was filling in these forms (mid december) EF changed the whole site which made zo have to answer some new questions, some old ones are gone and most of all: now you can only use a limited number of characters (800 characters, inclusing spaces) to answer a question. And answering short and briefly isn't really my thing. Definitely not when you have to tell about the things you want to accomplish in life. How do you tell about and explain (because that is what they ask) your dreams using five tweets? I have to shorten all the answers I already wrote in a way they still contain the main message. A difficult and time-consuming task.

Besides recieved all sorts of acceptationforms, academic and medical certificates and organize-list which should be completed and signed by me, my mom, school and the general practitioner. This also means we have to seach for my mark lists from grade one to six and the folder stating when I got my injections as a baby (!). We'll have some work to do.

Filling in all the forms will take some time but right now I live all sorts of preparation. Everything to be one step closer to the adventure!

Goed gevoel

Feeling happy

After finishing my SE week I finally have the time to give my acceptance to the High School Year Program from EF some thoughts. Due to all the fuss of the last couple of weeks it hasn't really sunk in that I will actually go to the United States next year.

When I came home this afternoon after finishing my last SE and while I was completely soaked I found the official forms at the door mat, amazing!

* see pictures above *

Although the rush I've been feeling a bit more relaxt since last tuesday. Finally I've some more certaincy about what I'll be doing next year and I've done everything possible to make this happen. Everyone who hears about my acceptance is enthusiastic and it feels amazing finally being able to say that I'll go! I also know slightly more about when I'll leave: right now the departement is planned on the fifteenth of July.

Next weekend I'll be working on my dossier to complete it so EF can start searching for a host family. And I have a lot of forms to fill in. Besides I'm already making all sorts of lists about what has to be done before I leave. My head is full of ideas about my last monts in The Netherlands. Can't wait!

AANGENOMEN

I GOT IN

I GOT IN!! I really got exepted to the High School Exchange Year, which means I will spend next year in America!

Josha already tried to call me last friday but I couldn't answer the phone because I was at work. We agreed I would call her back on monday but because of a breakdown at the EF office this also didn't work out. When I tried to call her back today I - finally - heard what I was hoping for: I can go! They believe I'm capable of going and they sent me the acceptation forms.

This news makes this terrible, rainy day, on which I had to make two School Exams and on which my grandmom had to move, a lot better!

I'm not sure what will happen next. I first have to wait for the acceptation forms and it shoud also include the information I need to finish the application. Most important is that I can finally answer the frequently asked question what I'm going to do next year: I am going to make my dream come true!

"Bericht"

"News"

The next two days I'll be home alone learning really hard for my School Exams (SE's) next week. Mama is at my grandmother's house this weekend; packing for the move tuesday and saying goodbye to the neighbours. I couldn't come with them this weekend: I have way to much schoolwork to do.

Yesterday I got a call from Josha but mom answered the phone because I wasn't home. I sounded like Josha had some (beginning) good news but I have to call her back on monday. This makes me thinking about what she was/is going to say whenever I start learning, not really practical!

But at least there is some news, finally! Hopefully monday I will know a little bit more where I'm standing and what I can prepare for.

Just have to wait a few more days!

Nog steeds wachten

Update:

Still waiting

Update:
Sadly I still haven't recieved the last recommendation letter. At the sixteenth of December we heard they would be sended to me 'at short notice' but the mail stayed out. After many attempts to call them we finally got a connection this tuesday. We were told the forms would be ready on friday so I coud pick them up. However this afternoon I got a phonecall saying I had to wait another week.

This really sucks! After two months I still don't know anything. Wat will I be doing next year? I've now idea at the moment and unfortunately almost all conversations at school are about what everyone's plans are for next year.

After the phonecall I immediately contacted EF and we agreed I would firstly mail them the other forms. This means most information has been sended to EF in The Netherlands and I hope in the meantime they will be able to decide what to do with it. For me it will in any case stay uncertain how it will turn out. The only thing I can do is wait and hope the last forms will indeed be filled in next week so my dossier will be complete (for now).

The last few weeks have been very busy with school, work, EF, the bathroom remodeling and grandmas move and it will stay this way the following weeks. For now, I first have to focus on the SE-week next week and hopefully after that I will recieve some good news!

Bad and good news

Unfortunately I still don't know if I can participate in the EF High School Exchange Program next year.

The interview last monday went really well! In the mail they said it would take from 7 until 9 PM but we left the Martinihotel at 10:30 at night. The first two hours the ambassador told us all about the exchange and what you can expect when you live a year in the US. We also heard what we should think about before I leave, what we should and shouldn't do and what will happen next. After that I got asked 26 questions in English about myself, my hobbies, my family, expectations, daily life and a lot more. In the end I had twenty (!) minutes to write an English letter which will be read by a possible host family and on which they will make up their first impression about me. Most applicants hear within one week if they get accepted for the programma so the only thing I can do is wait!

Unexpectedly I received a call the next they that, based on my motivation and how well I speak English, I got in. However there is one problem: American High Schools normaly don't accept students who have followed a VWO high school program. One thing that may help me to still get accepted is if I collect multiple positive letters of reccomandation.

Last week I've been very busy collecting these letters. The news really got to me and I'm willing to do everything to get accepted in the end. I already recieved two positive letters and two are on it's way!

Unfortunately it will take some time before I will know if I can go. First I need to revieve all the information, then I've to send it to the EF office in Amsterdam where the fellow workers has to decide what to do with it and from which it may all will be send to the EF office in America. However the American employees probably won't respond within two days (like they normally do), since a lot of people have some days off due to Christmas.

This means I still don't know anything and I HOPE to recieve a positive message before the end of January. All the conversations with former students made me even more enthusiastic and for a few weeks it seemed the adventure already had begun. By this message the possibility of me going to the US became a lot smaller. But I'm not giving up! Happily the reactions I recieved so far were all positive and I hope EF America will look at my letters of recommendation seriously.

Besides completing all the forms for EF I also have a lot of schoolwork to do. This doesn't have a good influence on the level of stress I'm dealing with. Before the end of the week I've to hand in multiple big rapports and I have a lot (to much) of other things to do. But after that I'm going to enjoy my two weeks if Christmas-holiday!

 I wish you all happy holidays and a new year full of joy and happines!

En dan niet simpele vragen zoals: what do you do on a friday night? maar: what do you want to achieve in life?

Before the interview

Tomorrowevening I will be interviewed by an EF ambassador in the Martinihotel at the Gedempte Zuiderdiep. EF has sent me ten pages with questions to fill in before the interview. And not simple questions like what do you do on a friday night? but: what do you want to achieve in life? Difficult questions to answer for someone who does not even know (exactly) what she wants to study.
Unfortunately the MyEF-site stopped working fridayevening, which made I didn't have the opportunity to answer all the questions.

Thoughts about the interview sre making me quite nervous. By an email from EF I know in big lines what to expect but what I´m most afraid of is that I will start talking stone coal-English because of the exitement.

First I have to go to school tomorrow and after that I hope the EF site will be on air again so I can finish the last questions. Tomorrow also is the first day of our bathroom-remodeling and at seven o'clock I will be present at the Martinihotel ... exiting!

BuitenlandBeurs

We zullen zien!

BuitenlandBeurs

(Hopefully) today my America-adventure has started ! Last week I have had contact with EF via email multiple times, but I haven't had the opportunity to call the EF headquarters in Holland. On the website we read about the BuitenlandBeurs, an information market on which different organiszations present themselves, in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. My goal was to gain information about the possibilities to go on a High School Exchange Year to the United States. I also wanted to know what other options there are to go abroad.

After getting up way to early on a saturdaymorning my mom and I got on the train to Utrecht at 09:15 AM. The train was overcrowded. By using earphones I tried to learn for my History School Exam on monday but it was hard to focus.
Around 11:15 AM we arrived in Utrecht and we walked to the Jaarbeurs. With a group of people, a barrel organ playing Sinterklaas-songs and children dressed like Black Piets we walked to the other side of the road. The sight of the enormous building was very impressive and I was really exited.

The BuitenlandBeurs was on the second floor. At the entrance we recieved a bag (form EF) containing information about the stock market and a map. EF's stand was located directly to the entrance and the first two hours the only thing we had seen was the first table in the EF-area. For two hours me and mom talked to Josha, Stéphanie and two former exchange students and asked them all sorts of questions. I got more and more exited every minute and I already pictured myself catching the plane to the United States. With a head and a bag full of information at two o'clock we decided to get something to eat and to get a moment to think about everything we just heard. In a few hours the adventure had become so 'real'. The possibility of me really catching that plain in August seemed to increase every minute. After lunch we fastly visited the other stands but it was really hard to focus on the stories of other organizations. The things the EF-coworkers and former students had told me made me so exited that all the other possiblities to go abroad didn't seem what I wanted. My expectations about a High School Year in America all got confirmed.

During our trainride home it was even more difficult to concentrate on my History Exam. My head was filled with thoughts and ideas about how it would be to live in America for a year, what I would do living in the US, what all the pros and cons are, if I will be able to leave everything behind for a year and a lot of thoughts.

When we arrived home we imidiately went to a birthday party in Glimmen. Everyone was curious to hear my stories and what is going to happen next.

This is what I know so far: mondaynight at the eigth of December I will be interviewed by a staff member of EF in Groningen (a former student and ambassador). During this interview me and my mom will receive a lot of information about an exchange year and we'll have to answer all kind of questions. After that they will question my motivation and how well I manage speaking English. I'm wondering how this will work out and if I indeed will be in the run for gaining a place in the exchange program.

We'll see!
