2 maanden verder

Het is alweer even geleden dat ik een blog geschreven heb. De afgelopen periode ben ik erg veel bezig geweest met school, werk en rijles en was het relatief rustig rondom het Amerika-avontuur.
De laatste week ben ik hier echter wel weer druk mee bezig geweest: ik moest mijn geboorteakte opvragen bij de gemeente, een meningokokken en een (nieuwe) DTP vaccinatie halen en als laatste lag er een Engelse test op me te wachten. Deze bestond uit een luister- en een leesdeel en was heel (!) goed te doen. Van de 74 luistervragen had ik er nul fout en het leesgedeelte, bestaande uit 71 vragen, heb ik met 4 foutjes afgesloten.
Als het goed is zijn nu alle formulieren waarmee de Amerikaanse organisatie me bleef verrassen volledig ingevuld en is mijn dossier nu (eindelijk) echt compleet!

M'n laatste SE-week is ook al een paar weken geleden en afgelopen woensdag had ik nog een inhaaltoets en een herkansing. Qua lessen heb ik op dit moment alleen nog examentrainingen. 24 april is 'LSD' (Laatste Schooldag) en gala en daarna volgen 'alleen' nog de examens. De zenuwen beginnen langzaamaan wel wat te komen.

Verder geniet ik volop van het heerlijke weer. Eindelijk geen winterjas meer aan en niet verkleumen 's ochtends op de fiets. Daarnaast ziet het er buiten natuurlijk veel leuker en fleuriger uit door het licht en alle planten, bomen en struiken die in bloei staan.

Het is heel raar hoe het einde van dit schooljaar en mijn middelbare schooltijd steeds dichterbij komen. De examens beginnen al in minder dan een maand! En daarmee komt ook mijn vertrek naar de VS steeds dichterbij. Natuurlijk heb ik er ontzettend veel zin in maar ik vind het ook lastig om sommige mensen en dingen hier achter te laten, ook al weet ik dat ik ze na een jaar (als het goed is) weer terug zal zien. Deze laatste maanden ga ik zoveel mogelijk genieten van alle lieve mensen en leuke dingen hier in Nederland, en daarna ga ik met veel gezonde spanning het avontuur tegemoet!


2 months later

It has been a while since I last wrote a blog. The last couple of weeks I've been very busy with school, work and driving lessons. I didn't have to do much to prepare for my America adventure though. The things I've been busy with, were: claiming a copy of my birth certificate, getting a meningitis and a (new) DTP vaccination and making an English test. This test consisted of a listening and a reading part and it was quite easy. I finished it with zero mistakes in the listening part (consisting of 74 questions) and four mistakes in the reading part (consisting of 71 questions).
My dossier should be complete by now, since I completed all the extra forms the American organisation kept surprising me with. I really hope so!

I finished my last School Exam-week a few weeks ago. Last Wednesday I had to make one test I missed because I was sick and I had to retake another. I don't have to follow normal classes anymore; I can only attend exam trainings. April 24th is our schools 'LSD' (Last School Day) and gala and after that the exams are the 'only' things that will follow.

Furthermore I'm enjoying the beautiful weather to the fullist. I finnaly don't have to wear my winter jacket anymore and I don't freeze on my way to school in the morning. Besides the sun and the blooming flowers, trees and bushes makes the world look a lot more fun and cheerfull.

It is really weird how the end of the school year and the end of my time at high school are comming closer every day. The exams start in less than a month! And with that my departure to the US comes closer. Of course I'm really looking forward to next year but it is going to be hard to leave some people and some things behind, although I know I'll be back within a year. I'm going to enjoy these last months in the Netherlands as much as possible and after that I'll start my adventure!

Formulieren ingeleverd

Eindelijk heb ik alle formulieren ingeleverd! Na eerst (bijna) alles op de MyEF website te hebben ingevuld en daarna alles overnieuw te hebben gedaan op de Online Portal van Into, kon ik eindelijk op het knopje submit klikken!

De aanmelding is dus rond en de Nederlandse en Amerikaanse medewerkers van Into zullen me nu proberen te 'matchen' met een gast gezin.

Zojuist een mailtje ontvangen met als bijlagen nog acht nieuwe formulieren om in te vullen: here we go!

Forms are submitted

I finally submitted all the forms I (and my mom and the GP and the hospital and a school teamleader and a teacher and the people from the GGD) had to complete! After first completing (almost) everything at the MyEF website and then completing it all again at the Online Portal from into, I could finally click on the submit button!

The application is official which means the Dutch and American employees and Into will try to 'match' me with a host family.

Eerste vaccinatie en tuberculosetest

Vanochtend om negen uur stonden mama en ik in de hal van het GGD-gebouw om m'n eerste Hepatitis vaccinatie te halen en om een tuberculosetest te doen.

Eerst moest ik een formulier met vragen invullen over m'n gezondheid en m'n plannen voor volgend jaar. Daarna werd gekeken welke vaccinaties ik al heb gehad en welke ik nog moet krijgen.

Gelukkig heb ik alle vaccinaties die Amerika verplicht stelt gehad, behalve Hepatitis B (en A in sommige staten). Vanochtend kreeg ik dus ook gelijk de eerste van drie Hepatitis A/B vaccinaties. Het deed best wel pijn en m'n arm voelt nog steeds heel zwaar (bekende bijwerking, ik heb me even voor laten lichten).

Daarna gingen we richting de TBC-afdeling. Weer een formulier met vragen over mezelf en m'n plannen en daarna weer een (soort) vaccinatie. Dit keer werd er een vloeistof in m'n onderarm gespoten. Dit vormt een bobbeltje onder m'n huid en daaraan moeten ze na 48 uur kunnen zien of ik tuberculose heb of niet (zeer waarschijnlijk niet, de kans dat je dat in Nederland oploopt is heel klein). 

Daarnaast ben ik vanmiddag naar de huisarts geweest voor het invullen van de medische verklaring (in plaats van donderdag). Nog meer bladzijden vol met vragen. Deze zal ik morgen ingevuld ontvangen.

Gelukkig heb ik morgen een belangrijk deel van de gegevens binnen en is een groot deel van de aanmelding afgerond. Dan kan het hele dossier eindelijk naar Amerika worden gestuurd!

First vaccination and tuberculosistest

At nine o'clock this morning me and my mom went to the GGD to get my first Hepatitis vaccination and to do a tuberculosistest.

At first I had to complete a form with all sort of questions about my health situation and about my plans for next year. After that a fellow worker of the GGD informed me about the vaccinations which I've already received and which ones I have to receive before I leave in July.

Happily I received all of the mandatory vaccinations to enter America, exept from the Hepatitis B (and A in some states) vaccination. This means I got the first of three Hepatitis A/B vaccins this morning. It actually hurt quite a bit and my arm still feels massive (common side effect. I asked, just to be sure).

After that we walked a few meters to the TCB-department. A new form with mostly similiar questions and again (sort of) a vaccination. This time they injected some liquid in my forearm. This will result in a small bump which will, after 48 hours, tell the TBC-department-lady if I'm suffering from tuberculosis (probably not because the changes of catching tuberculosis in The Netherlands are very small).

Beside all of the above, I also went to the GP today so he could complete the Medical Rapport (in stead of thursday). Again more pages filled with questions. They said the rapport will be filled in tomorrow.

Luckily tomorrow I'll have a lot of completed forms and required information so a big part of the application is done. After that the completed dossier can finally be sent to America!

Papierwerk

Hoe besteed ik mijn zaterdag? Met het invullen van formulieren van en voor EF!

Voor deelname moet elke student een dossier aanmaken op MyEF.com. Hierop staan allemaal vragen over jezelf, je hobby's, je familie, je dagelijks leven, je omgeving, et cetera. In de periode dat ik deze formulieren aan het invullen was (midden december), heeft EF het hele programma omgegooid, waardoor er nieuwe vragen zijn, andere vragen zijn verwijderd en vooral: je nu slechts een bepaald aantal karakters (800 tekens, inclusief spaties!) per antwoord mag gebruiken. En kort en bondig vragen beantwoorden is niet echt mijn ding. Zeker als je moet schijven over the things you want to accomplish in life. Hoe kan ik in vijf tweets vertellen én uitleggen (want dat vragen ze) waar ik van droom en waarom? Ik moet dus alle antwoorden die ik al geschreven heb zo inkorten dat ze toch nog bevatten wat ik wil zeggen. Een moeilijke en tijdrovende opdracht.

Daarnaast heb ik allemaal acceptatiebrieven, academische en medische verklaringen en regel-brieven opgestuurd gekregen die ingevuld moeten worden en door mij, mama, school en de huisarts ondertekend moeten worden. We moeten dus ook op zoek naar m'n schoolrapporten van klas één tot en met zes en het boekje waarin staat wanneer ik als baby (!) ben ingeënt. Maar ja, vind die maar eens terug...

Met alle invul-dingen ben ik dus nog wel een tijdje bezig, maar op dit moment vind ik de hele voorbereiding geweldig. Alles om een stapje dichterbij het grote avontuur te komen!


Paperwork

What do I do on a saturday? Filling in forms for EF!

To apply every student has to complete a dossier at MyEF.com. At the site you have to answer all sort of questions about yourself, your hobbies, your family, your daily life, the area you live in, et cetera. During the period I was filling in these forms (mid december) EF changed the whole site which made zo have to answer some new questions, some old ones are gone and most of all: now you can only use a limited number of characters (800 characters, inclusing spaces) to answer a question. And answering short and briefly isn't really my thing. Definitely not when you have to tell about the things you want to accomplish in life. How do you tell about and explain (because that is what they ask) your dreams using five tweets? I have to shorten all the answers I already wrote in a way they still contain the main message. A difficult and time-consuming task.

Besides recieved all sorts of acceptationforms, academic and medical certificates and organize-list which should be completed and signed by me, my mom, school and the general practitioner. This also means we have to seach for my mark lists from grade one to six and the folder stating when I got my injections as a baby (!). We'll have some work to do.

Filling in all the forms will take some time but right now I live all sorts of preparation. Everything to be one step closer to the adventure!

Voor het interview

Morgenavond is het interview met een ambassadeur van EF in het Martinihotel aan het Gedempte Zuiderdiep. Voor het gesprek moet ik tien bladzijden met vragen in het Engels hebben ingevuld. En dan niet simpele vragen zoals: what do you do on a friday night? maar: what do you want to achieve in life? Erg lastige vragen voor iemand die niet eens precies weet wat ze wil studeren.

Helaas hield de site van MyEF er vrijdagavond mee op, waardoor ik de vragen niet allemaal heb kunnen beantwoorden. 

Ik ben best wel zenuwachtig voor morgenavond. Door een email van EF weet ik wel een beetje wat ik kan verwachten maar ik ben vooral bang dat ik door de spanning steenkolen Engels ga praten. 

Morgen eerst naar school en hopelijk is daarna de MyEF site gemaakt zodat ik de laatste vragen ook nog kan invullen. Dan thuis kijken hoe het met de eerste dag van de badkamerverbouwing gaat en dan om zeven uur het gesprek ... spannend!

Before the interview

Tomorrowevening I will be interviewed by an EF ambassador in the Martinihotel at the Gedempte Zuiderdiep. EF has sent me ten pages with questions to fill in before the interview. And not simple questions like what do you do on a friday night? but: what do you want to achieve in life? Difficult questions to answer for someone who does not even know (exactly) what she wants to study.

Unfortunately the MyEF-site stopped working fridayevening, which made I didn't have the opportunity to answer all the questions.

Thoughts about the interview sre making me quite nervous. By an email from EF I know in big lines what to expect but what I´m most afraid of is that I will start talking stone coal-English because of the exitement.

First I have to go to school tomorrow and after that I hope the EF site will be on air again so I can finish the last questions. Tomorrow also is the first day of our bathroom-remodeling and at seven o'clock I will be present at the Martinihotel ... exiting!
